Three-masted barque from 1817 The H.M.S.Beagle was built around 1817. Class: three-masted barque. Length: 28 m. approximately. Armament: 8 cannons (before the transformation). Initially used as a coastal vessel, it was later intended and equipped for scientific observations that took it, through the Atlantic and the Pacific., to the most distant lands. In order to be able to steer the ship more easily along the barrier reefs of the Pacific islands, a mizzen mast was added which transformed the Beagle into a three-masted barque. Considering the peaceful purposes of the expeditions, the cannons were removed. December 27, 1831: the Beagle leaves Plymouth, England, for a long exploration voyage. On board one of the most famous scientists, Charles Darwin who, through the numerous experiments and subtle observations made during the journey, will develop his famous theory of evolution.
